"The Kennedys" on CNN continues with the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962
“The Kennedys” continued Sunday April 1 on CNN with an episode that focused on the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.
Kennedy was at Hyannisport and knew that there was suspicious activity in Cuba about a week before getting the intelligence photos (as in the movie “13 Days”).
Extensive plans were made to evacuate the Kennedy family, but Jacqui wanted to stay by her husband’s side even if they were to die in a fireball together, or of fallout.
The episode also emphasize how important the work of Robert Kennedy (Attorney General) in setting up the final compromise with the Soviets removing a base in Turkey.
I was at GWU in Washington in a cafeteria eating dinner when I heard the speech. I had to return to NIH later that evening. I had heard about an hour before that there was a serious threat from Cuba. Back at NIH, the patients knew nothing about it.
I was not as shaken personally now as I would be now.
